fiscal cliff talks with the white house. on capitol hill for one day at least, all was pretty quiet. posturing and finger pointing kind of stopped. cnn political reporter shannon travis joins us now live from washington. what's the the latest on the talks or the silence? >> the silence seems to be golden, john. remember last week when all the players involved seem to be posturing and positioning and talking about negotiations? not so much, at least in the past few days. we know president obama and house speaker john boehner had a one-on-one meeting, right, on sunday, their first since mid-november. what were the details from that meeting and from the ongoing discussions? they're not really -- both sides are not really being forthcoming with what the substance of those conversations, both sides yesterday, the white house and the republican leadership put out statements. they're essentially the same. i'll read just one from boehner's press secretary. discussions with the white house are taking place but we have no detail to share about the substance of those conversations. the republi

been agreed upon in the fiscal cliff talks, not to discuss the details. many look at this bipartisan silence and see an encouraging sign but white house and congressional sources tell me that while the atmosphere around these talks is positive between the president and speaker john boehner, when it gets to the underlying details, progress is maddeningly slow. president obama telephoned senate majority leader harry reid monday while rob nabors huddled for a second day in a row aide to speaker john boehner. no discernible progress toward breaking the fiscal cliff stalemate. mr. obama left that drama behind and told supporters in suburban detroit the fiscal cliff is serious business. >> if congress doesn't act soon, meaning in the next few weeks, starting on january 1st, everybody's going to see their income taxes go up. >> reporter: boehner and house republicans want to preserve all the bush era tax rates due to expire at year's end, shielding everyone from a tax increase. mr. obama wants to raise them for households earning more than $250,000 a year. he has so far resisted gop demands

cliff talks collapse entirely. it would be quite simple. house republicans would allow a vote on extending the bush middle class tax cuts. that bill already passed in august in the senate. and offer the president nothing more. no extension to the debt ceiling, nothing on unemployment, nothing on loopholes. congress would recess for the holidays and the president would face a big battle early in the year over the debt ceiling. ." two republican officials tell me this is becoming the most likely scenario. "the new york times" added more detail including this amazing quote from rep michael c. burgess of texas. "there's always better ground, but we have to get there." in this case the better ground is exchanging the threat of a congressionally induced recession for the threat of a congressionally induced global financial crisis combined with recession. that, that is your better ground? that's a big plan? it's not -- it's not better ground for the economy. and, frankly, i find it difficult to see how it's better political ground even for the gop. i figured, i didn't get it. so i fi

this improvement and what impact could it have on the overall economy and the fiscal cliff talks? we have some answers with the chief investment analyst at charles swhaub. >> were you surprised by these numbers? >> the payroll survey which is where we get the jobs created is generally a large company survey. so it may not pick up where the jobs were lost from the hurricane. the problem too is although the headline was positive the prior couple of months were revised down by a similar amount. i would say the report in general was about a neutral. >> also the fact the one employment rate dropped to 7.4% had a lot to do with fact people gave up looking for work. >> that's the rub. the headline is good. a big part of that reason is that over 300,000 people dropped out of the workforce. >> the biggest growth in jobs seem to doinl retail sector. is that significant? >> we're having a pretty decent holiday season and it's seasonally normal to see the kind of boost in retail and hospitality, things at the holiday season. i wouldn't necessarily make anything of that other than tha

, the "national review" is reporting that if the fiscal cliff talks go sour, that john boehner might have a challenge for his speaker post. do you agree with that? >> i think speaker boehner is extremely strong in his position. he's been very, very smart, including the republican leadership, in his negotiations. while it's just him and president obama, he has them inside the room before he goes and meets with the president, he talks to them and they reflect the views of the entire conference. the key here with the entire deal is that the devil is in the details. once these details come out, it's going to take arm-twisting by both sides. it's going to take calls from the president and democrats. it's going to take the speaker to make sure republican conference members are falling into line and that's where we're going to see, when the rubber meets the road, if this deal can get done. remember, you know, health care reform by the president passed on december 24th. so we do have a president there just going right up to christmas. and if it doesn't happen at christmastime, they'll be coming b

the fiscal cliff. i am told, though, that there was no real progress in negotiations. in this sense there was no breakthrough on that central point of tax rates. as you know, president obama insists there is no deal unless the gop agrees to raise rates on the top 2% of earners. the gop says that's a nonstarter and the two men have not moved from that basic position. now, all of this quomz comes at the same time treasury secretary geithner also said for the first time the administration would be willing to go over the fiscal cliff if the gop does not agree to raise those rates. this was treasury secretary geithner earlier today on cnbc. >> is the administration prepared to go over the fiscal cliff? >> oh, absolutely. there's no prospect to an agreement that doesn't involve those rates going up on the top 2% of the wealthiest. all americans get a tax cut on the first $250,000 of their income. so, in some sense it's a tax cut for all americans. >> reporter: bottom line, anderson, we're talking today but still at stalemate. >> yeah, i mean, it's a sign, jessica and dana, of just how lac

're not having a conversation about spending. the republicans and democrats alike designed the fiscal cliff. it's a series of bipartisan compromises and i think it's kind of foolish to think that this group of congressmen and senators is going to come up with a way out of something they themselves designed. >> rich, you worked for a republican speaker who went up against a democratic president over the spending issues. back then the face-off didn't turn out all that well for your party. obviously very difficult era. do you agree with eric's take? is the right strategy for republicans to stick to their guns, forget about compromise? >> no. i really don't -- eric is one of my favorite people. we talk a lot. but i think that, and i did work for the speaker gingrich during the shut-down fight in '96, and it did not work out well for republicans. the president has a much bigger bully pulpit than the speaker does. newt gingrich's bully pulpit was pretty big back in those days but at some point, republicans in the house -- and i think boehner is trying to look for ways to do this, speaker boehner, tha
